The Sculptors Alliance educational program was originally based on independent workshops. Generally, on-site workshops of 3 hours long in one contact session. Some workshops take 12 hours, divided in 4 contact sessions (meeting for 3 hours once a week for 4 weeks).
Our Sculpture Workshops program for 2020 (originally scheduled to take place during the Spring of 2020) has been placed on hold until further noticed due to COVID-19.
As we continue to build these programs, we invite artists to submit proposals for our new online-exhibitions and online-workshops at the Opportunities tab on the main menu. Please read our online-exhibition Open Call, and become involved now!

Soap Carving
Soap relief carving, a traditional method of creating three dimensional form in soap, spans all cultures and time periods. Come and see all of the amazing ways that craftspeople have carved and shaped forms to create models for churches, temples, architecture and more.
In this introductory session, participants will learn about various tools and species of soap available for carving a relief sculpture. The class will also consist of examples of carving, a demonstration of tools and tool safety, brainstorming for ideas for a relief sculpture in wood and stone, and a short period of working. Participants will leave the class with a work in progress, with the ability to continue it on their own.
Modeling Clay
The workshop starts with an explanation and demonstration of how to create a prototype from modeling clay using fruits as a model. Jump in and learn to get the information of shape, contour, and proportion by looking and measuring and then use your hands and clay tools to recreate the fruit . We will work from the general to the specific, from overall form to create surface details and textures and learn how to use them to maximize the feeling of volume and gravity.
